Everyone has their list of Pros and Cons when it comes to Hawaii. Many of the Pro comments were similar—sun, ocean, mountains. Many of the Con comments were similar—expensive, too much to see, too far away. The choicest of the choice:

Maui – the island of Maui is a crown jewel in the islands and an increasingly popular destination for tourists from North America, Asia, and Europe.

Pros – Heaven on earth, beauty everywhere on this island.

Cons – Heaven was never this expensive.

Yes, but heaven doesn’t take American Express.

Pros – A gorgeous island with lots to do for everyone.
Cons – it is 5,500 miles away from Massachusetts.

And that’s a good thing.

Honolulu – this is a major metropolitan city despite the weather, mountains, beaches, and palm trees. We have traffic jams, crime, and expense like you wouldn’t believe. Still, there are the memories…

Pros – Sun; balmy climate; rainbows everywhere; great bus system; convivial people.
Cons – mediocre food, if you don’t know where to go.

“Convivial” people? Does that have anything to do with our great tans?

Pros – Waikiki is NOT New York with a beach. It smells better than NY.
Cons – Costs about the same.

Molokai – this is about as secluded as tourist can get in Hawaii. Not much is happening on Molokai and what is happening is much slower than anywhere else in Hawaii.

Pros – the sunsets, the long beaches, the lack of touristy stuff, the solitude.
Cons – probably not good for kids.

Overdose the kids on Ritalin, NyQuil, turkey and mashed potatoes—they’ll be fine.

Pros – if you can’t relax on Molokai seek professional help.
Cons – there’s not a developed tourist industry.

That’s why it’s so relaxed over there.

Kauai – the Garden Isle is green for a reason. Lots of sun. Lots of rain. And everything in between—including a mini-Grand Canyon and the wettest spot on earth.

Pros – Temperate climate, friendly and helpful non-tourists, terrific snorkeling.
Cons – rain, non-existent night life, once you’ve seen one coconut palm, you’ve seen them all.

Pros – the most beautiful island of them all.
Cons – evil blood suckin’ mosquitoes!!

True, but they’re laid back—they drink real slow.

Lanai – the Lodge at Koele is a favorite for us. And for many others. It’s pretty much unlike any place you’ll ever see in Hawaii. Activities are limited—unless you like mud, rain soaked clothing, and warming up near a fireplace.

Pros – very peaceful with excellent food.
Cons – ate too much food and got fat.

That only happens if you stay more than three hours.
