Maui. It’s An Island. It’s A County. It’s Two, Two Places In One!
Grab an extra package of Certs (two, two mints in one), we’re heading to Maui again while listening to the beat of a different drummer on my iPod. 2,000 songs in your pocket—and not one of them says anything about Maui. So, with nary a to do, everything you didn’t want to know about Maui… Sites about Hawaii often give you the touristy view. Beaches. Palm trees. Mountains. Surfing. Paradise. You know the routine. But perfect weather, perfect beaches, and perfectly filled out bikini tops are only a part of the picture that makes up Hawaii’s greatest natural treasure—the island of Maui. There’s another side to Mau. This expose’ is about the Maui you never see. The Maui that never shows up on a travel brochure. The Maui none of your friends ever mentioned. It’s Maui Unleashed: Maui County Online. This is the view of Maui that’s unfettered, unleashed, raw, natural—blemishes and closets. Maui as seen through the eyes of “The Official Web Site For The Government Of The County Of Maui.” It’s everything you didn’t know about Maui and probably didn’t want to know. Don’t be deceived by the Home Page. The beautiful photograph of the islands and the rare Silversword will only serve to drop your guard. The official weather conditions for Kahului, Maui (clear, 82-degrees, winds NNE at 18 mph) will pull your eyes deeper into the waiting fly paper of useless facts, unnecessary information, and names of Maui folks whose descendants are long since gone to that great surf meet in the sky. The top link takes you to the Mayor. He’s the most important person on Maui. Unless Barbi Benton or Tera Patrick are staying at the Grand Wailea again. Next is the City Council. They’re important, too. Less important than they think they are. More important than we think they are. However, most folks can remember the Mayor’s name and they can’t remember their city council person. Subsequent links on the site take you to various and sundry Maui County Departments, among them: Civil Defense, Finance, Liquor Control, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police, and Water Supply. Just click. You’ll be linked to everything you need to know about the inner workings of Maui County. No self respecting web site would be complete without a Frequently Asked Question section. Here, the Maui County government delivers in spades. I counted 35 FAQs. And 35 answers to the FAQs. It’s a long page, to be sure, but the 35 “back to top” links make navigation quick and easy. Why would you, who probably don’t care much about all this Maui County government and web site hoopla, really care? Why is this being mentioned at all? Because it’s an excellent web site, and indicative of how well organized things are on Maui. Relevant information is just a click or two away. In detail. Easy to find. Free, if you’re on the Internet. So, my point is, information this good should be everywhere and about everything. Want to know about wind surfing on Maui’s North Shore? It should be this easy to find. It’s not. But it should be. Want to know the best places to eat in Hawaii? Click over to Ono Dining for totally biased reviews on Hawai's best (and not so best) restaurants. Posted by Darren Y. K. Chang on 07/13 at 05:46 AM
