Secret Agent Quiz: Who Said This?
If you said James Bond, you got it half right. The “shaken, not stirred” is in reference to Bond’s penchant for dry martinis. Name the famous secret agent who also loves sushi? Buckaroo Banzai, of course. Who else? What you may not know is that Buckaroo Banzai not only loved sushi (do you have a choice when your nickname is “Banzai”?), he also saved one of the many parallel universes we live in. I’m not sure if Buckaroo Banzai ever made it to Hawaii. Since everyone else did, I’m going on a limb to say that BB made it to paradise once or twice. Assuming he did, where did he eat his sushi? The strong influence of Japan on Hawaii’s culture means that sushi is a big part of our ethnic foods. If Buckaroo Banzai came to Hawaii anytime since his movie in 1984, he probably dined at Yanagi Sushi on Kapiolani Boulevard. Yanagi is a favorite since the 1970s. Buckaroo Banzai’s father was a famous Japanese scientist. His mother was born in Texas. They were both killed in a fiery crash of an experimental jet car while attempting to penetrate the Eighth Dimension. Not sure if they have sushi in the Eighth Dimension. Unless Buckaroo Banzai came to Hawaii in the past five or six years, there’s a good chance he missed out on California Beach Rock ‘n Sushi on Ward Avenue (next to Dixie Grill on the corner). I’m inclined to think he’d like his sushi at California Beach. While not as tasty or nearly as authentic as Yanagi (their Unagi and Anago are to die for), the atmosphere is more to BB’s taste at California Beach—neo warehouse is in these days. Buckaroo would prefer eating sushi in a modified Kakaako warehouse than sitting in the dainty little girl chairs at Yanagi. After a bottle of sake or three or four Kirin beers, he’d never know which had the best sushi anyway. So, looking for good sushi in Honolulu? Try Yanagi first. Everything else is downhill from there. What’s on your list of favorite scifi B movies? The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and the Eighth Dimension should rate in the top 10. For real. Just look at the list of stars. Peter Weller starred as Buckaroo Banzai. I have no clue if he ever starred in anything else again. John Lithgow was Dr. Emilio Lizardo. Jeff Goldblum was featured as friend New Jersey. Christopher Lloyd was John Bigboote. James Saito was Buckaroo’s father. His mom? Jamie Lee Curtis. Want to know the best places to eat in Hawaii?
