Top 10 Lists: An American Fetish Comes To Hawaii
We’re a nation of Top 10s, Ratings, Surveys, and Lists. Why? I don’t know. There’s Letterman’s nightly Top 10 List, now in its second decade. We rank movies based on their gross ticket sales, not number of viewers. TV programs that don’t make the Top 40 get canceled. We always want to know what’s number one. Here’s what’s Number One in Hawaii… I found a site called RateItAll.com—the Opinion Network. It’s almost the ultimate in ranking sites. You enter a category, give your selection a rating (5 stars is good, 1 star is not), then share your opinion with others. The site adds up the ratings and comments and gives the item a score. Simple enough, right? Yes, if there’s enough people playing the game. If not, it’s very easy to skew the results. Here’s a good example. I want to find out which restaurants and bars in Honolulu are the best. Granted, this is not a very scientific way to determine the best in town, but it’s a way. So, what’s the best restaurant or bar in Honolulu? According to the folks that did the ratings on RateItAll.com, it’s La Mariana Sailing Club. Two of the three who rated it, gave it Five Stars. That’s tops. What kind of comments did they leave behind? “The food is good, the drinks are great, and the atmosphere is unforgettable. This place is pretty hard to find, however. If you think you’re lost, you’re probably right on top of it. GO THERE GO THERE GO THERE, before someone with a Denny’s franchise decides to tear it down.” Hey, I like Denny’s. But they closed it down in Waikiki. Regardless, it’s obvious that an employee of La Mariana Sailing Club did NOT write the comment — there’s no address to be found. True, I haven’t been to every restaurant and bar in town, but this one I’ve never heard of. A quick search at Google.com brings up a recent review of La Mariana in the Honolulu Advertiser. The headline says, “La Mariana Experience Rises Above So-so Menu.” OK, what’s that mean? Food is average. The place is fun. The critic described it as 90-percent experience and 10-percent food. Uh-oh. Fortunately, it’s on Sand Island Access Road which means it’s near Keehi Lagoon so you’ll be able to see plenty of boats while you dine. Maybe you’ll need to count the boats, or seagulls, or something — to keep your mind off the food. Remember, this is the best dining place in Honolulu—according to the three folks who coughed up a comment for RateItAll.com—the Opinion Network. Want to know the best places to eat in Hawaii?
