Tour The Big Island In 80-Seconds.
Hit the stop watch… The first thing you’ll notice about Hawaii when comparing this island with Maui, or Oahu, or Kauai, is the size. It’s big. Then you’ll notice those two, huge protruding mounds reaching for the blue Hawaiian skies. No, Dolly Parton isn’t lying on her back on the beach. It’s twin 13,000 foot mountains; Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The Kona district on the west side of Mauna Loa is home to Kona coffee. For over 100 years they’ve been exporting coffee from Hawaii’s famous coffee area. Like to hike? Can you say “Pu’uhonua O Honaunau”. It’s a national historical park. Don’t forget to visit the Heleipalala Fish Ponds. What, you say it took you 80-seconds just to get through those Hawaiian Words? And we haven’t even made it to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of The Humuhumunukunukuapuana Breaststroke. But that’s another story. The Kohala Gold Coast area sports some luxurious resorts along Waikoloa, Hapuna Bay, Mauna Lani, and the Kekaha Kai State Park (look for the big green turtles) and pristine beaches. That means sparkly clean and unspoiled. Ready for more words to tie your tongue into twenty knots? Try your luck on these: • Plu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (not far from Kawai’hae) Where’s Kawai’hae, you ask? Not far. That’s as close to a fully fledged circle tour as we can get. Hey, 80-seconds is easy to fill. It’s difficult to pronounce some of those words, so if you’re not “local” you’re probably still trying to string those vowels together. Time’s up.
