Walk The Walk At Waimea Falls
Oahu’s North Shore is a natural wonder land of breathtaking beauty, mountains, beaches, and waterfalls. Waterfalls? Waimea Falls Park, not far from the monster waves of famed Waimea Bay, is a packpacker and nature lovers paradise. Why? Think lush. Think green. Think waterfalls. Waimea Falls Park is 1,800 acres of lush, mostly undisturbed Hawaii. Tucked back into Waimea Valley, the park offers something for everyone (except snow capped peaks and a mall). Landscaped and manicured gardens flow up to the falls. Many stops along the way will provide you with an hour of photo opportunities alone (politics comes to the nature trail). A nearby arboretum holds more than 5,000 varieties of plants Garden lovers will love the guided trails which wind (actually, meander is more accurate) through the valley. A nearby arboretum holds more than 5,000 varieties of plants; some endangered species among them. Who counts that many plants?
Waimea Falls is home to nearly three dozen species of birds and a couple of dozen All Terrain Vehicles—just to keep the birds from getting too much rest. OK, falls is falls, right? Nope. Waimea Falls has a treat in store for you near the top back in the valley. The falls. They’re stunning. Cool streams of mountain water cascade down the lava rocks to a deep and still pool at the bottom? Can you swim in the Falls? No, too many rocks. But you can swim in the pool below the falls. Hahahaha. Gotcha. For the adventurous, there’s Hawaiian food, medicinal plants (no, not marijuana), and a delightful interactive area with special exhibits, some history of Hawaii and Waimea Valley. Waimea Falls brings you sights… and mosquitos. If you’re local, Waimea Falls is a great day-long attraction for you and the family. Kids will love it. Bring a cooler and picnic. If you’re a tourist and visiting the islands, Waimea Falls brings you sights you won’t see elsewhere on the island. And mosquitos. Did I mention the mosquitos?
