A friend has sent you a link to the following article: http://hawaiicam.com/index.php/hawaiicam/comments/61/ The right hotel makes a good vacation great. A crummy hotel makes a great vacation less than good. How do you make a hotel stand out among the crowds of hotels in Waikiki? Cookies. Hotels in vacation destinations such as Hawaii fall into three basic categories. Resort (Hilton Hawaiian Village), Quality Hotel (Sheraton Waikiki) and Basic Hotel (any of the Outriggers). There’s a new category which is gaining popularity—boutique hotels. “What makes all the difference in the world? Pool? Location? View? Staff? Rooms? Rates? Nah. It’s the cookies!”Boutique hotels will often cater to a certain clientele—business, weekend getaway, banquets and meetings. In Waikiki, one such hotel is the Doubletree Alana. What makes the Alana special isn’t the convenient location. It’s isn’t the great restaurant (it’s great). It isn’t the thoughtful services from a quality staff. Those things help but are obviously not the key to success. It’s the cookies! Don’t get me wrong. Service is important. So is a clean room. And amenities. Gotta have ‘em, right? What makes all the difference in the world? Pool? Location? View? Staff? Elegantly furnished rooms? Competitive rates? Nah. The Alana’s got all that. So, what is it? It’s the cookies! The Alana features the DoubleTree Cookie Tin from Christie Cookie. You won’t find that at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Here’s the web site promotional quote: “The Doubletree Cookie symbolizes the warm, friendly and caring personality of the Doubletree Hotels, Suites, Resorts and Clubs. Our signature chocolate chip cookies are manufactured by The Christie Cookie Company and handpacked in decorative tins. These Doubletree Cookie Tins are ideal for special occasions, holidays and client leave behinds. And now you can have them delivered anywhere throughout the U.S…” Wow. They have their own cookie. It’s better than shopping at C. S. Wo on Beretania Street (long known for offering hot cookies to shoppers of rather unique but over priced furniture…find the bargains by following the trail of chocolate chips embedded into the carpet). Is that cool, or what? Only $8.95 for a tin. Not just any tin. This one has the DoubleTree name on it so you know it’s gotta be good. Except for the fact that cookies in a tin are usually not as fresh as fresh baked. Yes, they were probably fresh baked when they put them in the tin, but you never know for sure. The staff could have gone to lunch or something and then put the cookies in the tin when they got back. It could happen. What makes you select a certain hotel in Waikiki? Beds? Bar? Restaurant? View? Rate? Location? Yes, those are important. As far as the DoubleTree Alana Waikiki is concerned, we’re certain that it’s the cookies that get them to the top of the list. Now, all I need are some samples and I might be persuaded to spruce up my review just a bit. Check out each at—DoubleTree.com and ChristieCookies.com.
