If the Spanish were first, why didn't they stick around? Why'd they leave Hawaii?
Kauai is my topic of thought for the day, but I’ll yield in favor of the thoughts of Spanish galleons sailing into Honolulu Harbor a century or two before Captain Cook managed to sail into Hawaiian waters. read more » Tuesday, September 22, 2009
It spurts. It squirts. It's wet. Danger and Death Playing at the Blowhole.
Hawaii has probably more outdoor activities than any other island in paradise that begins with “H” and uses the American dollar as currency (that saves me a lot of fact checking time). Some activities are fun. Some are not. Here’s one that's both… read more » Friday, September 18, 2009
Hawaii's cuisine is as varied as our people; a little of 'dis, a little of 'dat.
Hawaii is known for a varied cuisine with an Asian heritage that goes back over 100 years. Japanese, Chinese (all varieties), Korean, Filipino. Wait. There’s more. Hawaiian, Indian. Portuguese. French. Italian. Sometimes, all on the same menu. read more »See the Big Island. On foot? If you got a few years.
If you could take all the other islands in Hawaii and squeeze them together, they’d fit inside the Big Island and there’d be room left over. That’s how big the Big Island is. Tourists and locals alike have worn a well trodden path to the major and minor shopping locations on Oahu. Ala Moana Center. Pearlridge Center. Windward Mall. Sam’s Club. Costco. Here’s my list of the best off the beaten path… read more » Tuesday, September 08, 2009
No coconut trees, no palm trees; only fir, redwood, and eucalyptus trees.
What? No palm trees? Well, this can’t be Hawaii, can it? Yes, Virginia, Hawaii has mountains high enough where the palm trees don’t grow. Today we visit the cool uplands of the Garden Isle, Kauai. read more » Friday, September 04, 2009
What you see in Hawaii is "paradise above." There's a whole nadda one below...
Most folks come to Hawaii because it’s like a fabulous paradise. Great weather. Gorgeous mountains. Lush greenery. Volcanoes. Tropical beaches. The raw beauty of nature. That’s the paradise above the water. Below the water is a whole different paradise. read more » Wednesday, September 02, 2009
Where's Hana? What's it like? Why would you go there? Good questions, all.
OK, where's Hana? It's on Maui. How do you get there? Pull out your intestines and sling ‘em to the floor. It’ll look just like a map of the road to Hana, Maui. It’s all twisty, and curvy, with hairpin turns, and narrow constrictions, and bumps in the road— similar to those two Krispy Kremes you had this morning. read more »
